Five Easy Turns was written and illustrated to set the teaching
standards of my Cross-Country Ski School at the Sierra Club's Claire
Tappaan Lodge, close to the Donner pass. Tom Martens, editor of the
Tahoe World Newspaper, was photographer and editor for this project.
We published the book ourselves under the imprint of Nordic Press, and
the book sold 10,000 copies on the West Coast. Four-time cross-county
skiing Olympian Lyle Nelson described it as "The best teaching book
available for turning on skis." There are now just a few copies
left, and it has become a collector's item among cross-country
enthusiasts.
The five most useful turns: Step, Skate, Snowplow (wedge), Stem, and
Telemark were photographed with an eye to catching every phase of each
turn. I had at this time a contract with the Fischer Ski Company to
test all their cross-country skis: Note the 'slippers' we were using
in those days, these came with the skis.
